Don't vote for one-issue candidates

Option 1A is important in the upcoming local elections in Naperville. With Option 1A, 81 percent of the garden plots will stay at West Street. No plots will be lost as new ones are provided at other sites. Two practice fields will be added to the South side garden plot area to replace those that will be permanently lost to the cemetery. These fields will ensure that programs like NCHS football, lacrosse, and soccer, Napewrville Youth Football League and St. Raphael Football will not be hurt by having to relocate.

It's amazing that a small group of gardeners so stubbornly oppose 1A. The 428 plots are rented at either $26 or $21 to a few hundred people. Due to this minuscule rental cost, the garden plot program lost $20,000 last year. Why does this group get such preferential treatment? Please do your homework for this upcoming election. Find out who is supportive of 1A. There are several gardeners running for park board and city council. We must not vote for these unqualified, one-issue candidates. We must prevent busing of children to offsite practice fields. It is risky, expensive (more than $24,000 per year), and wastes valuable time. We must avoid the disruption of the programs that are enjoyed by tens of thousands of children and family members. The minority should not rule the majority. There should be a concern about liability that the city would incur if players were injured on unnecessary bus rides or at a remote field site that is far away from the school and hospital.

There is certainly a greater need for playing fields than for garden plots. Surely a small fraction of that land can be shared.
