Man held in ax attack accused of lying about name
Another felony charge has been leveled against a man accused in an ax attack at a Lake County trailer park last week, authorities say, because he lied and gave them his brother's name after his arrest.
Philip R. Tate, 28, of the 2500 block of Jones Drive in North Chicago, claimed he was "Vinson H. Tate" when he was nabbed following a March 19 melee and through the booking process at the Lake County jail, Round Lake Park Police Chief George Filenko said.
Tate, a known gang member who had no identification when he was arrested, even claimed he was on probation from Indiana prison stay during a Lake County bond court appearance, the chief said.
However, an Antioch police officer relayed a tip to Round Lake Park authorities March 20 that the arrested man was really Philip Tate, not Vinson, Filenko said Monday. Tate gave his brother's name because he was concerned about a Lake County arrest warrant for not appearing in court on a resisting arrest charge in 2008, Filenko added.
Tate faces an obstructing justice charge for giving his brother's name, along with aggravated battery with a deadly weapon/great bodily harm, Filenko said. Tate's held on a $500,000 bond at the jail in Waukegan.
Round Lake Park police gave this account of what happened at Timber Creek mobile home complex:
Three men got into a confrontation outside of a trailer home in the 400 block of Center Street, possibly over a debt. A 28-year-old Chicago man then stabbed Philip Tate's 22-year-old brother, a Waukegan resident.
Grabbing a full-handle ax, Tate used the blunt end to hit the Chicago man four times. Police found the Chicago man bleeding and unconscious off Center Street.
Filenko said the Chicago man is in critical but stable condition at Advocate Lutheran General Hospital in Park Ridge. The Waukegan man was treated for injuries.
Tate, who has a criminal history, confirmed his identity when Round Lake Park investigators confronted him in the county jail, Filenko said. Tate's true identity would have been revealed in a matter of days from a computerized fingerprint check, he added.
