Mundelein deputy police chief being investigated, officials say

One of Mundelein's deputy police chiefs has been placed on paid administrative leave as a complaint against him is investigated, village officials confirmed Sunday.

Deputy Chief Cameron Eugenis, a 22-year department veteran, is the subject of an internal investigation, Mayor Kenneth H. Kessler said. The inquiry is based on a complaint that came from within the department, not a member of the public, officials said.

Village leaders did not disclose the nature of the complaint.

Eugenis was placed on leave last week, Kessler said.

Eugenis could not be reached for comment.

Police Chief Raymond J. Rose and Village Administrator John Lobaito are leading the investigation, Kessler said.

"There is a set of procedures to be followed, and that's what's being followed," Kessler said.

He referred other questions to Rose or Lobaito.

Rose called the matter a "personnel issue" and declined to talk about the specifics of the investigation, other than to say officials are following proper protocols for such a complaint. Lobaito could not be reached for comment.

Village board members were notified of the investigation Friday in a memo from Lobaito, Trustee Ed Sullivan said.

Sullivan called the investigation "preliminary."

Eugenis, 45, is one of the police department's two deputy chiefs. He's overseen the department's operations division since being promoted to deputy chief in 2001.
