Sinkhole grabs Des Plaines squad car
The road collapsed from underneath a Des Plaines police officer and his squad car Friday morning while parked on a patch of sidewalk/driveway of a private property along Lee Street, police said.
The car was removed from the sinkhole by a crane. City engineers and public works employees are investigating the sinkhole to determine whether the roadway is structurally sound, police said.
A gas line runs underneath that area. As of late Friday, a portion of Lee Street between River Road and Elk Boulevard was closed to determine how much of the roadway is affected, police said.
