Liberatore, Tarabein, Coughlin endorsed for Kildeer trustee
Move over, Boston Tea Party. Angry Kildeer residents have another sort of political motivator at work. Three of four candidates running for the village board were at least partially spurred out of anger over how the village leadership responded to a community pet parade. They aren't just mad the village refused to help pay for the parade aimed at building community spirit; they're furious some village officials stepped up and took credit when the press arrived.
Ralph Liberatore, Basel Tarabein and Barbara Stavropoulos say such behavior is indicative of why change is needed in their town and are challenging incumbent Trustee Olivia Coughlin, who is running as a write-in after her candidate petitions were successfully challenged. Coughlin, who served as a judge at the offending parade, agrees some change is needed but feels some of the needed change will come with staffing changes already in the works.
The challengers say they'll also change how the village's small police force staff is treated.
Coughlin said some of the anger stems from miscommunication or a misunderstanding over the required process for contract negotiations, but notes it still could be improved.
Once they get past the anger issue, Liberatore and Tarabein, who both have clear understanding of the need for economic and community development, appear poised to be effective board members. Coughlin brings strong historical perspective and a much-needed understanding of government process. Stavropoulos could also be effective if she learns more about village government.
Liberatore, Tarabein and Coughlin are endorsed.
