'Buy local' doesn't equal 'spend wisely'
In regards to your "our view" on the opinion page of the March 10 paper: Let's see now, people are losing jobs, having their wages cut, taxes are going up, and your solution is "Fight back by opening your wallet?" Who are these "local experts" you speak of? Here is a tip for you: there is no linkage between buying locally and buying wisely!
I live in St Charles. I expect the city to buy wisely - after all, it's my money they are spending. If that means buying outside the city limits, that's what should be done. I can't imagine a city bid going to a vendor because the company is in town verses being a low bid - and justifying it by saying it will help the local economy in the long run. When a city is operating in the red, or proposes a budget that is in the red (and claims it's a good budget), something needs to be cut.
Starting with entertainment is the correct place to start. Here is another tip for you. There is some linkage between entertainment and a frivolous purchase. This "it will pay dividends in the end" sell job is a big gray hole and is one of the reasons why our economy is in the tank!
