Daley, police superintendent wave off censure

Chicago Mayor Richard Daley is dismissing a union no-confidence vote against Police Superintendent Jody Weis, saying he has confidence in him.

Daley said Wednesday that Weis is a very good and honest superintendent who has done a good job.

The mayor was reacting to a Tuesday vote during a Fraternal Order of Police meeting that expressed disapproval of the superintendent's performance.

According to union president Mark Donahue, the vote was the result of many issues of concern to police officers, including low staffing at some of the city's police districts, and how Weis has handled police brutality complaints.

Weis, a former FBI agent, is the first outsider to be named superintendent in decades. He defends his tenure, saying improvements to the department are under way.
