'Waltz With Bashir' at After Hours
'Waltz With Bashir'
From the After Hours Film Society comes an Oscar-nominated animated doc about an Israeli (filmmaker Ari Folman) who can't recall his role in a 1982 massacre and sets out to remember it. A brilliantly executed drama five years in the making. $9 admission. (630) 534-4528 Afterhoursfilmsociety.com. Rated R (violence, nudity, sexual situations) 90 minutes.
730 p.m. Monday at the Tivoli Theatre, 5021 Highland Ave., Downers Grove.
'Shuttle'
Edward Anderson's nerve-jangling directorial debut "Shuttle" comes thisclose to being a cut above the standard survival thriller. But he capitulates to a horror cliché worthy of a cookie-cutter "Friday the 13th" sequel. In this digital HD-shot feature, five airport passengers take a shuttle bus late at night and fall victim to a creepy, sociopathic driver (Tony Curran). Packed with surprises and earned thrills, because the people behave as we think real people would under similar circumstances. On DVD April 27. Rated R (violence, language, nudity). 106 minutes.
Starts today at the Century Centre, 2828 N. Clark St., Chicago.
'Great Buck Howard'
Steppenwolf Theatre alum John Malkovich shines in this sparkling character study, undermined by Colin Hanks' voice-over narration. With his loopy handshake and trite catchphrase "I love this town!," Buck (Malkovich) once ruled late-night TV as a mentalist. Now, the has-been Buck makes a comeback with his assistant (Hanks) and a publicist (Emily Blunt). A smart and original film. (PG) 87 minutes.
Opens today at the Music Box Theatre, 3733 N. Southport Ave., Chicago.
