In Palatine: Mullins for mayor, Helms and Jezierski for trustee

The fact that four candidates are actively seeking to become the Palatine mayor is a sign of healthy concern for the village's future.

Deli owner Vito A. Manola Jr., 49, sought the post four years ago and gave incumbent Rita Mullins, 63, a bit of a wake-up call. This time, he is joined by former trustee Warren Kostka, 53, and former Chicago Bear Jim W. Schwantz, 39. a national sales manager with a moving firm.

The challengers all are concerned about how the economy is affecting business attraction and retention. Kostka suggests Palatine needs a business liaison, while Schwantz calls for a more proactive approach. Manola suggests the village cut business fees or the sales tax. We question how that revenue would be replaced. The challengers also complain about Mullins' trips to work for stimulus money and attend national mayors' conference and other meetings.

Mullins has a point when she notes her critics complain she isn't out and about enough helping business but then also complain when she takes working trips. Still, Mullins should remember all politics is local and this criticism reflects real concern about her focus.

Schwantz brings a fresh dynamic to the race as a popular candidate who cares about Palatine. If he is not elected, we encourage him to stay connected to constituents and get directly involved to gain government experience.

For her passionate commitment to her community and years of experience that will be useful in a tough economy, Mullins is endorsed for a sixth term.

We applaud Palatine resident John Del Re, 45, for running as a write-in candidate for trustee after he didn't like hearing Mullins congratulate incumbents after the initial filing deadline passed. He is concerned about flooding and too much bureaucracy for business, but incumbent District 6 Trustee Brad Helms, 43, does seem to be working at those concerns. Helms is a thoughtful trustee who tries more than most to reach out to his constituents and he is endorsed.

District 1 Trustee Michael E. Jezierski Sr., 63, faces a feisty challenge from Aaron Del Mar, 30, a local business owner. Del Mar, who should not be dismissed by Jezierski because he is a first-time candidate, wants improved communication between the council, businesses and residents. With Helms, veteran Jezierski is endorsed as a strong steward of Palatine's budget and bond rating.
