Nix's quad acts up again

TUCSON, Ariz. - Jayson Nix's spring took another turn for the worse on Tuesday.

Having already missed a week with a strained right quadriceps, the 26-year-old infielder reaggravated the injury during the White Sox' Cactus League game against the Diamondbacks.

Nix, competing with Chris Getz, Brent Lillibridge and Gordon Beckham for playing time at second base, is out indefinitely.

"I'm kind of worried about him," said White Sox manager Ozzie Guillen. "With that type of injury, it's hard to recover quick. Right now, we should give him enough time, no matter what stage of spring training, to get him healthy."

Nix is batting .462 in the exhibition season.

"He was playing good, making all the plays," Guillen said. "Now it's best for the team and him to make sure he heals completely."

Good to go: Jim Thome tested his stiff back in a simulated game Tuesday and felt good enough to return to Cactus League play today against the Angels.

"Everything went real good today," Thome said. "I probably got 6 or 7 at-bats and worked on some things, and everything was great."

Rough go: Dayan Viciedo doubled high off the center-field wall in Tuesday's game against Arizona, but he was later tagged out trying to advance to third base.

It's been a tough spring for the touted 20-year-old, but Viciedo (.231) hasn't been completely healthy.

"He's had shin splints for a little while," Ozzie Guillen said. "This kid never worked this hard in his life. We have a program he has to. He never had spring training like we do in major-league baseball. I don't think they run and do things for 3-4 hours straight up doing stuff. It's new for him and he should be tired, sore. No question about it. It's the first time he's done this."
