Landfill odor control

An upgrade of gas expansion wells and other measures should put an end to odors from the Countryside Landfill near Grayslake, county officials said Tuesday. Landfill operator Waste Management is documenting odor reports and implementing procedures to investigate and control odors following an independent evaluation of the facility undertaken after complaints of a foul smell late last year. Upgrading gas extraction and 16 other recommendations agreed to by Waste Management are expected to reduce the potential for odor emissions. The Lake County Health Department, which is the regulatory agency for landfills, issued a violation to Waste Management in December. The department has increased site inspections and with other agencies will continue to monitor and assess the situation.
