Stevenson ties opener

The Stevenson girls soccer opened its season Wednesday with a 0-0 deadlock in a nonconference match against New Trier in Winnetka. In the previous three seasons, the Patriots had opened with 1-0 losses to the Trevians. Patriots keeper Courtney Levy earned her first shutout, making 7 saves. The Patriots received solid defensive efforts from Taylor Connington, Emily Niedermayer, Jenna Schiller and Lindsay Onysio.

Baseball

Vernon Hills 4, Waukegan 2: Jamie Manhard pitched 5 scoreless innings, striking out three and allowing just 2 hits, as the Cougars won their season opener. Scott Kempel earned the save, striking out four in 12/3 innings. He also delivered a two-out, 2-run triple and had a single.

Wauconda 10, McHenry 6: John Motley hit a 2-run homer for the Bulldogs, who got doubles from Ted Litberg (2-for-2), Nick Jay (3-for-4) and Brandon Dill (2-for-3). Dayton-recruit Bryce Lahrman struck out six in 3 innings, allowing 3 unearned runs.
