Depression photos stretched the point
I was disturbed by the photos on the front page of the Daily Herald that compared two lines of job applicants, one from the Great Depression and one from more recent times in a highly specialized industry. I am in no way discounting the reality of the current economy but this seemed to stretch the issue to make a point. I am sure it alarmed a lot of readers, as it was a grim and striking comparison. However, it seems a bit disingenuous on the part of the Daily Herald to try to lead us to draw a comparison between people in a line to take any kind of work available and people lining up for positions in a competitive job marketplace even in the best economic times. This would have carried more weight if we knew how many positions were available, what type of position it was, and what similar applicant counts were during a strong economy.
