Peoria officers arrested after videotaped beating
PEORIA -- Two Peoria police officers have been arrested in connection with the 2008 beating of a 33-year-old man that was captured on a squad car video.
Officers Andrew Smith and Gerald Suelter were arrested Monday night on charges of official misconduct, aggravated battery, battery and mob action.
Peoria County Chief Sheriff's Deputy Joe Needham says the two remain in jail. They haven't yet appeared before a judge, so they haven't been formally charged and bond hasn't been set.
According to police, Bryce Scott was beaten early May 3 after leading officers on a chase. Scott says he got out of his car as officers asked. But he says he was pepper sprayed, kicked, shocked with a stun gun and punched.
It isn't clear yet whether the officers have attorneys.
