A few things about Arlene Mulder

Election campaigns seem to bring out a lot of information about the candidates. I have known Arlene Mulder since the day she moved into Arlington Heights with her family 39 years ago. I'm pleased to say that we are close friends, and that I have been involved in most of her campaigns since she first ran for office.

During that time I have learned and observed several things about her that most people don't know. Here's a sampling:

• She grew up on a farm in California, milking cows and picking cotton.

• She was president of her high school class and her college sorority.

• She plays the clarinet.

• She taught and coached girls varsity sports at Niles West High School in the 1970s. The basketball team she put together and coached won the 1979 state championship the year after she retired from teaching and coaching to give birth to her son. She was chiefly responsible for that team's success.

• As mayor, she has an open-door policy. Anyone is welcome.

• She works long hours for the residents of Arlington Heights - for no pay. She does not accept the mayor's annual salary of $8,500.

What most of us do know about Arlene is that she is a respected leader and a tireless worker for all of us in Arlington Heights. The leadership and team-building skills she exhibited years ago have helped to bring remarkable changes to the village during her tenure as mayor.

Let's continue this positive change. Please join me in voting for her on April 7.
