Mayor: Hanover Park police have shooting suspect in custody

Saturday's shooting in Hanover Park appears to be gang related, said Village President Rodney Craig.

Police on Saturday arrested a 15-year-old and charged him with aggravated battery with a firearm, according a statement from Hanover Park Deputy Police Chief David Webb. The teen has been taken to the Cook County Juvenile Detention Center in Chicago.

The shooting happened around 4:15 p.m. near Sycamore Avenue and Church Street. The victim, who police only identified as an 18-year-old Streamwood man, remains at St. Alexius Medical Center in Hoffman Estates recovering from a wound to the left arm, police said.

The investigation led to the discovery of a handgun in a yard of a vacant home, police added.

But even though the victim escaped serious injuries, Craig remains incensed by the shooting.

"Any shooting is a big thing," Craig said. "The fact we got a 15-year-old with a weapon flashing gang signs is a concern of mine."

The shooter was in a car which pulled up next to another vehicle at a stop sign and the shooter flashed gang signs, Craig said. The victim didn't respond the signs and was shot, Craig said.

"This was an act of stupidity by a 15-year-old," Craig said.

Hanover Park was rocked by a fatal shooting and a fatal stabbing over the course of five days in November. Craig has touted the need for additional police officers on village streets saying it would improve public safety. He's further stressed the need for more police during this election year as he faces Trustee Lori Kaiser on Election Day April 7. Messages left with Kaiser have not yet been returned.
