Palatine massage school marks first year

Since its opening one year ago, the Refresh School of Therapeutic Massage has graduated 21 sets of magic hands.

The Palatine massage therapy school will hold a grand reopening at 10 a.m. Monday, March 16. Mayor Rita Mullins is expected to attend the event, open to the public and particularly prospective students. Free chair massages await.

Drs. Jay Basra and Daman Singh, doctors of chiropracty, own the school and have more than 10 years experience teaching massage therapy.

Refresh School offers an eight-month full-time program and a 12-month part-time program. Both total 720 hours - well above the 500 hours required to become a licensed massage therapist in Illinois.

Graduates have gone on to work independently or in salons, doctors' offices, chiropractors and hospitals.

Singh said there's an increased interest as baby boomers age and massage becomes more mainstream.

"It's not the outcast the way it used to be," Singh said. A new full-time session begins April 6.

At the student-run clinic, the public can get hourlong massages for $25.

Refresh School is at 444 E. Dundee Road. Call (847) 879-1034 or go to myrstm.com.
