Elementary students bring ancient China to Lake Zurich
Fourth- and fifth-graders at Seth Paine Elementary in Lake Zurich have been memorizing lines, dance steps and set changes for five months.
That practice culminates in the performances of "Mulan Jr." today and Saturday at 7 p.m. at Lake Zurich High School. Tickets cost $6 per person.
"Try to hit that middle mark. You're in the middle," Mary Keller, co-director of the show, told students rehearsing a musical number.
As the actors tighten up the show in their final rehearsals, they will also have to adjust to working on a much larger stage. The production moves from its rehearsal space in Seth Paine's gym to the 679-seat Performing Arts Center for the weekend performances.
The play is based on the 1998 Disney animated film about a woman in ancient China who secretly takes her father's place in battle to save him.
Zach Keller plays Mushu in "Mulan Jr." and is no stranger to the big stage. His performance in "Suessical Jr." led to a role as a munchkin in Lake Zurich High School's production of "The Wizard of Oz."
"That's one of the biggest plays I've ever done," said Keller, a fifth-grader.
For other students, this will be the first experience on stage.
Students had to audition with spoken lines and a song, but everyone who auditioned was given a part.
"It's the kids who are not going to have that opportunity (again) that we do it for," Mary Keller said.
Jillian Gallagher, a fourth grader, said she is pumped up about being on the Performing Arts Center stage.
"I need to be responsible for (remembering lines and cues)" she said.
Parent volunteers have been the engine for the production, from direction to costume design. "Mulan Jr." has 175 costumes, all provided by parent volunteers.
Zach Keller has gotten a lot out of participating in past shows and is excited for this weekend.
"You're proud of how people clap for you and how good of a job you do," he said.
