On the big screen this weekend
'Everlasting Moments'
Undermined by an intrusive, superfluous voice-over narration, Swedish director Jan Troells' sumptuously photographed, impeccably detailed historical drama "Everlasting Moments" tells the poignant story of an abused woman's salvation through art. In 1907 Sweden, Maria Larsson (Maria Heiskanen) has seven children and an alcoholic, abusive husband (Mikael Persbrandt). After she wins a camera, her eye captures amazing images and changes her life. In Swedish with subtitles. Not rated. 132 minutes.
Starts today at the Century Centre in Chicago and the Renaissance Place in Highland Park
'Waiting for Dublin'
This strained piece of romantic World War II comic blarney offers a board-stiff leading man plus a silly ending pulled out of a screenwriter's tushie. U.S. pilot Mike Clarke (Andrew Keegan) bets Al Capone $10,000 he can shoot down five Nazi planes. When Clarke is stranded in an Irish village with four kills and the war ending, he asks a Nazi pilot to take a dive. Jade Yourell debuts as Maggie, who agrees to sex if Clarke promises marriage. He lies. Not rated. 83 minutes.
Opens today at Pipers Alley Theaters in Chicago
