Cubs lose to Dodgers as Dempster goes 3 innings

MESA, Ariz. - Randy Wolf pitched 3 scoreless innings, and Doug Mientkiewicz hit his second home run of the spring, leading the Los Angeles Dodgers over the Cubs 5-4 Friday.

Wolf gave up 1 hit, walked two and struck out three. Jeff Weaver followed with 2 shutout innings.

Mientkiewicz homered and drove in 2 runs.

Cubs starter Ryan Dempster allowed 2 runs and 3 hits in 3 innings. Matt Kemp led off the game with a single and later scored when the Cubs couldn't turn a double play.

"I just want to continue to get better, pound the strike zone and throw as many quality strikes as possible," Dempster said.

Cubs star Derrek Lee went 0-for-3. He doesn't have an RBI in 12 at-bats this spring.

"I think you will start seeing our regulars get a little more at-bats," Cubs manager Lou Piniella said, without mentioning Lee by name. "I haven't seen the production and bat speed we need to see."

The 33-year-old Lee has seen a significant drop-off in home runs since sustaining a wrist injury that limited him to 50 games in 2006. His home runs over the last two seasons (44 total) didn't equal his career year of 2005, when he hit 46 homers.
