Dog saved by Lake Zurich firefighters

A dog was rescued by Lake Zurich firefighters after falling through the ice on a subdivision's pond Friday. Firefighters responded to an 11:38 a.m. call that a dog named Dakota was in the water on the 0-100 block of Birch Lakes Drive.

According to a news release, "Dakota's owners, along with area residents, were attempting to rescue the dog using a kayak and a rope."

Hawthorn Woods police, who also responded to the scene, instructed the rescuers to back away from the pond.

Firefighters used ice rescue equipment and, less than 10 minutes later, brought Dakota to safety.
