Glenbrook North tops New Trier
Glenbrook North rode the coattails of junior Alex Dragicevich to win the New Trier boys basketball Class 4A regional title.
Dragicevich scored 33 points, pulled down 9 rebounds, blocked 2 shots and threw in a couple of steals to boot in the top-seeded Spartans' 73-58 win over No. 8 Evanston.
"Alex had a great rebounding night," said Glenbrook North coach Dave Weber. "He stepped up big with his defense. With the man he was guarding, he played more under that basket."
The Wildkits (15-13) led 16-14 after one quarter with Garrett Jones scoring 8 of his team-high 17 points.
Glenbrook North (21-4) never trailed following Austin Weber's 3-point play from a steal with 6:40 left in the half for a 19-16 lead. The Spartans led 32-27 at the break.
Leading 35-31 following a basket by Jones, GBN went on a 11-0 run to put Evanston away with 4:21 left in the third quarter.
Dragicevich's 3-pointer opened up a double digit lead during the run. Dragicevich hit 9-of-13 shots and four 3s.
"I had some good shots tonight," said Dragicevich. " It was a lot of hard work in practice and it paid off tonight. We had to attack their zone and beat their traps."
Weber, Michael Phillips, and Matt Merrigan, who came off the bench, each scored 10 points.
Eric Dortch scored 12 points for Evanston. Ryan Frazier-Chambers and Nik Garcia each had 11 points.
