Former Loyola basketball star Tillman dead at 62

Loyola University is mourning the passing of former men's basketball star Jim Tillman, who starred for the Ramblers from 1965-68.

Tillman passed away Wednesday, at the age of 62.

The Jamaica, N.Y., native accumulated 1,168 points and 564 rebounds in three years on the varsity squad. His best season came in 1966-67, when the 6-foot-5 junior center averaged 24.7 points and 11.3 rebounds per game en route to All-America honors. The following season, Tillman contributed 17.7 ppg and 8.1 rpg to help the Ramblers reach the NCAA tournament, and as a sophomore, Tillman also was a key contributor on a Loyola team that reached the NCAA tournament.

Tillman led the team in scoring in both 1966-67 and 1967-68 and a year ago was selected to Loyola's 1960s All-Decade Team.

Prior to Alfredrick Hughes's 26.1 ppg average in 1987-88, Tillman's 24.7 ppg mark in 1966-67 stood as Loyola's single-season record.

A resident of Valparaiso, Ind., Tillman had owned and operated BT Express Trucking since 2002.

A funeral is scheduled for 11 a.m. Monday at St. Paul Catholic Church, 1855 Harrison Boulevard, in Valparaiso. Visitation will be at the church from 10-11 a.m. Monday.
