Order shrimp dinner

Orders are due Wednesday for the Geneva High School football team's shrimp carryout dinner fundraiser, which is from 4:30 to 7:30 p.m. March 13. Dinners include shrimp with cocktail sauce, a baked potato, coleslaw and dinner roll. Orders are $10 apiece. To order, call Rob Wicinski at (630) 463-3929.

Depression in youth

"Empowered Parents, Empowered Children: Working Together to Overcome Depression," presented by social worker Cathi Hendricks and Jessica Swabey, is at 7 p.m. Thursday at Williamsburg Elementary School, 1812 Williamsburg Ave., Geneva. Learn how to recognize the signs of depression in elementary, middle school and teenage youth, where to get help and what treatment is available. It is sponsored by the Geneva Coalition for Youth and TriCity Family Services.

Eat well at ECC

Lunch service has resumed at Spartan Terrace, the upscale restaurant operated by students of the Culinary Arts and Hospitality Institute of Elgin at Elgin Community College. The restaurant is open from 11:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. Tuesdays and Thursdays through April 30 inside the Culinary Arts Center, 1700 Spartan Drive, Elgin. The menus, created by students and instructors, are changed once during the semester to give students the opportunity to prepare and serve a variety of dishes. This semester, guests can enjoy lunch fare such as sea scallops and risotto, grilled salmon, steak and frites, and seared tuna salad niçoise. Prices range from $7 to $10. Reservations for lunch and dinner are recommended and available by calling (847) 214-7382.

Anti-violence group benefit

Waubonsee Community College's Womyn for Womyn group will stage a performance of "The Vagina Monologues" at 8 p.m. Friday in the Auditorium of the college's Sugar Grove campus, Route 47 at Waubonsee Drive. Tickets are $10 and are available by calling the student activities office at (630) 466-7900, ext. 2929. The production is sponsored by V-Day 2009, a global movement to end violence against women and girls by raising funds and awareness. Proceeds benefit VDay.org, Mutual Ground of Aurora and TriCity Family Services of Geneva.

Aurora fire chief retires

Aurora Fire Chief Tim Oelker will retire April 3 after 30 years with the department, officials said. Oelker, 57, has served as chief since November 2005. When the Aurora native joined the department, there were 110 full-time firefighters; now there are 207. Oelker said he's confident his replacement will come from within the department.
