Gilberts man shot after trying to halt suicide

One man is dead and another injured after a bizarre shooting Sunday night in Gilberts.

The victim who survived was shot in the hand while trying unsuccessfully to stop another man from killing himself, Police Chief Mike Joswick said.

It was not immediately know where the victim was transported for treatment. Joswick said, but his injury was not considered life-threatening.

The incident occurred about 10:30 p.m. in the 100 block of Greenbriar Drive, Joswick said.

Police were releasing few other details about the incident, or either man's identity today.

The man killed probably was 22 years old and definitely shot himself in the head, Joswick said.

"From where we stand right now, this is not anything more than a self-inflicted gunshot," he said, adding that the death investigation is ongoing.

The Kane County Coroner's office has scheduled an autopsy for 4:30 p.m. today and was releasing no other information.
