U.S. Grant should be memorialized
In honor of Ulysses S. Grant, I would like to propose that the Highland Avenue bridge over the Fox River in Elgin be named Grant Bridge and a plaque posted memorializing the man. This is an appropriate choice because long ago that part of Highland Avenue was Business Route 20 and that route ultimately led to Galena and Grant's home. Highland Avenue is also a block from where President Grant gave a speech to Elginites at a now demolished train station.
We honor the Plote family at the Kimball Street bridge with a monument. Is not a United States president, winning general and Illinois resident worthy of being remembered? He visited Elgin twice, yet we cannot acknowledge him? Is he to be tossed into the dustbin of history for being outdated and no longer relevant? What does this say about how we honor the United States Constitution? Let's again honor President Grant in Elgin.
