1 dead in Chicago fire
Authorities say a Chicago man has died from injuries suffered in a fire that also briefly left a firefighter cut off from his comrades.
The fire occurred Sunday night at a two-apartment building on Chicago's northwest side.
Chicago Fire Department spokesman Larry Langford says a 60-year-old man was taken to Swedish Covenant Hospital in critical condition after being found in full cardiac arrest. He died a short time later.
Langford says a firefighter who was among the first at the blaze was briefly cut off from his fellows as they began tamping down the flames with hand-held fire extinguishers before hoses could be added to the effort. The fire spread quickly and briefly trapped the firefighter, but he managed to get out safely.
