Some letters make good fertilizer

First, to the editors, thank you for continuing to supply us "common folk" with a forum to express our opinions. We're not bloggers as we have neither the time, the gas nor the degree of self-importance. And if we actually had to put pen to paper and mail it, this page would probably be blank.

So, CK wrote that "There are countless politicians and CEO's who make abortion a cornerstone of their value system." Really? Like who? These shotgun ad hominem attacks are great fodder for certain "news" programs and Web sites run by people who live in their mom's basement.

There are many people who are very concerned about the "rights of the unborn" from conception to birth, then criticize (see Ann Coulter and Charles Krauthamer) the "life choices" made by single women who accept their responsibilities of parenthood and struggle to raise their children, yes, sometimes with public assistance. So they're damned if they had abortions, and damned if they try to raise their children.

Where's Ward Cleaver when you need him? What an easy-answer world some folks want other people to live in.

We have two children, both adopted, and as far as we're concerned they are as much "ours" as anybody else thinks theirs are. Plus, we "chose" to have these kids.

Also, you talk about how "Catholic schools flourish because some people put their money where their mouth is." As someone who was raised a Catholic, I won't totally disagree. But before you assume the higher moral ground over the rest of lowly humanity, it might be wise to remember what percentage of your weekly offerings have gone to pay certain legal fees over the past few years.

The last time I looked, we paid at $7,000 in property taxes on our home. How much did your church (or any church) pay? I'm guessing at $0. In case of fire, who do you call, the Catholic fire department? My taxes help to protect the property you pay no taxes for. As you say, "What's wrong with this picture?"

I've cut out your letters to use in my garden this spring. I'm looking forward to a bumper crop.
