'Gomorrah'
Except for a "Scarface" reference, there's nothing Hollywood about Matteo Garrone's bleak and unromantized look at organized crime on the mean streets of Italy, based on the expose book by Roberto Saviano, reportedly under 24-hour police protection for the past two years. Garrone's drama has a detached doc texture as it follows five interlaced storylines illustrating the casualness of violence and the insidious corruption of the mob (inspired by the ruthless Camorra families of Naples). In Italian with subtitles. No MPAA rating (language, violence) 135 minutes.
Opens today at the Music Box Theatre, Chicago
