Palatine man charged after hit-and-run; police say drugs found

A 30-year-old Palatine man landed himself in court Wednesday after police say he hit a car, left the scene and passed out in his car, all with heroin in his possession.

Michael G. Platt, of the 200 block of Wilson Street, was charged with unlawful possession of a controlled substance, driving under the influence of alcohol and drugs, leaving the scene of a property damage accident, improper parking on a roadway and no insurance.

A Cook County Circuit Court judge set bond at $25,000, Palatine police Cmdr. Kurt Schroeder said. Platt, who must post 10 percent to be released, remained in custody late Wednesday.

Around 4 p.m. Tuesday, Palatine police said someone called 911 after witnessing Platt hit a car in a parking lot on the 1400 block of Evergreen Drive. The caller followed Platt's 1999 Chevy pickup truck about half-mile to Route 53 and Rand Road.

Authorities responded and found an unresponsive Platt behind the wheel. Paramedics woke him up and transported him to Northwest Community Hospital in Arlington Heights, where he was treated and released.

Police searched the car and said they found five baggies containing a white powdery substance that later tested positive for heroin.

Platt is due back in court March 11 in Rolling Meadows.
