Feds bust alleged fake ID ring in Chinatown
FBI agents and police are rounding up alleged members of a fake ID ring that prosecutors say operated out of Chicago's Chinatown area for five years.
Charges against 19 individuals including two employees of the Illinois secretary of state's office were unsealed Wednesday as lawmen closed in on the ring.
U.S. Attorney Patrick Fitzgerald says people entering the country illegally can't be allowed to assume other individuals' identities and then use those identities to conceal themselves.
Authorities say the alleged ringleader, Jun Yun Zhang, and two other men are still being sought.
They say the ring obtained Social Security numbers from individuals who worked in Saipan and combined them with real or counterfeit Chinese passports.
