Buffalo Grove tops Elk Grove in OT

Elk Grove's only 3-pointer was a big one, but it wasn't enough for the Grens.

Guard J.J. Lastovich beat the fourth-quarter buzzer with that 3 to force overtime. Visiting Buffalo Grove was able to withstand the momentum shift, though, and pull out a 55-52 Mid-Suburban East boys basketball victory on Friday night.

"We did a lot to lose the basketball game, Elk Grove did a lot to win the basketball game," Buffalo Grove coach Ryan O'Connor said. "We were very lucky tonight."

In such a close contest it is easy to look at free throw shooting as the difference. The Bison (15-10, 6-4) sank 21-of-30 attempts while Elk Grove (7-19, 2-8) was 15-of-27 from the charity stripe.

"I'm not pleased with the way we finished the game," O'Connor said, noting that his team had most of its 9 misses from the line down the stretch. "Even though we had more points on the scoreboard, we want to be winners and I'm not so sure we were tonight."

Nick Prus was BG's leading scorer with 17 points. Kevin Mulligan had 13 and Dan Wichmann added 9 points.

Elk Grove's Donny Duschinsky tied Prus for game-high scoring honors with 17. Andy Larson had 14 for the Grens - 12 of which came after halftime - but he fouled out midway through the overtime.
