National doctors group blasts U of Chicago hospital

The nation's largest emergency physicians group is blasting the University of Chicago Medical Center in the wake of a recent newspaper story about a boy attacked by a pit bull who was sent away with only a shot and painkillers.

The American College of Emergency Physicians says Thursday the Chicago hospital is dangerously close to "patient dumping," an illegal practice under federal law.

Last week, the Chicago Tribune reported that 12-year-old Dontae Adams, a Medicaid patient, had to ride a bus to a county hospital for surgery after he was refused admission at the medical center.

The University of Chicago Medical Center issued its own statement saying the doctors group is distorting the case. The hospital says the group's criticism is "based on hearsay."
