Aurora woman charged with forgery, identity theft

An Aurora woman has been charged with identify theft and forgery, accused of using another woman's name and Social Security number for the last eight years, according to North Aurora police.

Patricia Legaspi, 36, of 1543 Superior St., was arrested Wednesday, police said. She posted $2,500 bond the same day and was released.

She is charged with Class 5 felony identity theft and Class 3 forgery.

Legaspi was arrested at her place of business in North Aurora.

According to police, Legaspi used the other woman's Social Security number, Nevada driver's license and date of birth to get a job in North Aurora in May 2001. She made more than $50,000 in the last three years using the information. The forgery stems from her endorsing a paycheck made out in the false name.

The Las Vegas woman discovered the theft when she received a statement from the Internal Revenue Service showing taxable wages tied to her Social Security number that were not hers. The Nevada woman has never been to North Aurora.

Legaspi's next court date is March 4. She has no criminal record in Kane County under her name, other than traffic citations.
