Maine West falls to Resurrection in overtime
Resurrection rode Kelly McKay's hot shooting and timely streaks at the right time to oust Maine West 62-54 in overtime at the Class 4A girls basketball regional in Chicago.
Shaina Yalda's basket with 2:31 left gave the ninth-seeded Warriors (17-14) a 48-42 lead. However, Jamie Teichman and McKay connected on consecutive 3-pointers to tie it at 48-48 with 1:06 left.
Samantha Acosta's (19 points) drive to the basket put the Warriors back in front with 50 seconds left.
The eighth-seeded Bandits (12-16) tied it at 50-50 on Jenna Rice's only basket with 8.6 seconds left.
The Warriors were unable to get a shot off before time expired.
"Some of our defensive mistakes led to those last two 3 pointers," said Maine West coach Derril Kipp. "Then we could not get a shot off."
McKay, who scored 21 points and hit five 3s, gave the Bandits the lead for good in the overtime at 53-50.
The two teams exchanged a set of baskets but trailing 55-54 with 2:18 left, Maine West saw the Bandits score the final 7 points.
"The end of the game was the story of our season," said Kipp. "We haven't been able to finish the game. It just came down to mental toughness."
Megan O'Neil scored 18 points and pulled down 7 rebounds for Maine West.
Teichman and Caitlin Olijnyk each scored 16 points for the Bandits. The pair also pulled down 8 rebounds each.
"It was a unfortunate loss," said Kipp, "But we have something to build on next year. Our top three scorers return, but we did lose some senior leadership."
