Batavia restaurant can't serve liquor for two days
A downtown Batavia restaurant will have its liquor license suspended for two days because a bartender served alcohol to an underage, undercover agent in a sting operation Dec. 10.
Chapala's, 90 N. Island Ave., won't be able to serve anything alcoholic Friday, March 13, or Saturday, March 14, Mayor Jeff Schielke announced Monday night. It was also fined $1,000.
Technically Chapala's is a restaurant, but Schielke said he believes it has been opening on weekends as a nightclub.
The bartender, 50-year-old Rebeca Hernandez of the 400 block of Downer Place in Aurora, faces a separate criminal charge of serving alcohol to a minor.
Three other Batavia businesses also received fines from failing checks that night, which were conducted by Batavia police and the Illinois Liquor Control Commission:
• Full Moon Bar and Grill, 115 S. Batavia Ave., $1,000 fine. The bartender, Kara Coffman, 23, of the 400 block of Brookside Drive in Oswego, was charged.
• Batavia Bowl, 120 First St., $500 fine because it was its first violation. The bartender, 29-year-old Misty Garza of the 500 block of Madison Street in Batavia, was charged.
• Jewel-Osco, 199 S. Randall Road, $1,000 fine. Clerk Laura Reinhardt, 44, of the 27W600 block of Roosevelt Road in Winfield, was charged.
