Six hurt in Palatine crash; Hicks Road mostly closed

Six people were taken to area hospitals following a crash involving four vehicles at Hicks Road and Carpenter Drive in Palatine early Sunday afternoon.

Two cars sustained heavy damage, while the other two only incurred minor damage.

Fire officials said the accident occurred at 12:36 p.m. Palatine police said witnesses told them one vehicle was making a right turn from Carpenter onto Hicks when it was struck head on by another vehicle headed southbound on Hicks that had driven over the center line. The collision started a chain reaction involving the two other cars.

Palatine fire Capt. Bill Gabrenya said the occupants of the two cars initially involved needed to be extricated. He said six patients total were transported to Northwest Community Hospital in Arlington Heights and St. Alexius Medical Center in Hoffman Estates. Four refused treatment, fire officials said.

Most lanes of traffic along Hicks Road were closed while tow trucks carted away the twisted remains of the vehicles. They were still clearing the road at 2 p.m.

The cause is under investigation.
