Discrimination is OK in marriage debate
I agree with Judith Carlson in her Jan. 18 Fence Post letter that banning gay marriage is discrimination, recognizing gay and traditional marriage are different and cannot share the same definition.
The ban preserves traditional marriage's unique status, and declares it should be exclusively promoted as the preferred choice for foundational family structure.
Gay marriage requires discrimination to determine whether it is between males or females. I
f marriage is to be truly inclusive and tolerant, why discriminate against polygamy and polyamory?
Discrimination would be required to determine the number of partners, gender, and sexual orientation of each. As long as partners willingly enter into the agreement, why not evolve marriage into Family Incorporated? If two mommies are good for a child, wouldn't more mommies be even better? Until now, society determined traditional marriage was the best social structure for procreation and child rearing to occur, which are necessary for the survival of civilization. All major religions discriminate in favor of traditional marriage. Biblical support for gay marriage is nowhere to be found. Romans chapter 1 is particularly discouraging, although it does provide an explanation for homosexual behavior. Many believers consider marriage sacred and gay marriage sacrilegious. Dating service eHarmony was sued for discrimination for not including same-sex dating, essentially extorted into setting up a same-sex dating service in violation of the founder's moral beliefs. If you find religion irrelevant, perhaps humanists could agree that heterosexual behavior is best suited for survival, and that complementary anatomical structures favor male-female coupling.
Discrimination against gay marriage is choosing behavior which is deemed more beneficial in favor of another. We all make choices which may affect not only ourselves but society as a whole. You can choose to stand up for traditional marriage, or allow others to redefine marriage for you.
