NIU Remembers: A Day of Reflection

Schedule of activities for Saturday, Feb. 14, 2009:

10:30 a.m.: NIU Remembers: A Legacy of Character

Memorial ceremony at the NIU Convocation Center.

11:30 a.m. - 9 p.m.:

• "Today, We Are All Huskies" art exhibit

Holmes Student Center - Art Gallery & Lounge. Mementos sent to NIU from around the world following our tragedy.

• NIU Remembers Video Montage

Holmes Student Center- Capitol Room North. Continuously running video images reflecting on Feb. 14, 2008, and aftermath.

• Peace Room

Holmes Student Center - Douglas Room. A quiet and reflective place to visit.

• Huskies Healing Huskies

Holmes Student Center - University Suite and Neptune Hall - Fireside Lounge. Counselors are available to provide resource and referral.

• Memorial Quilt

Founders Memorial Library - Fourth Floor Regional History Center. The community quilt is on permanent display.

• Break Zone

Holmes Student Center - Huskie Den. A place to relax with refreshments provided. Lunch is available for purchase in the Blackhawk Cafeteria in Holmes Student Center and at Neptune Central in Neptune Hall.

Noon to 1:30 p.m.: Forward, Together Forward Scholarship Luncheon & Ceremony

Invitation-only ceremony to remember students who were killed and announce recipients of scholarships in their honor.

12:30 to 2:45 p.m.:

•Images of Hope Project

Holmes Student Center - Capitol Room South. Images conveying the hope of the NIU community after Feb. 14, 2008.

•Huskies' Acts of Kindness

Holmes Student Center - Promenade Lounge. Student-designed postcards reflecting acts of kindness performed in memory of the victims.

• Memorial mosaic

Holmes Student Center - Regency Room. Guests are invited to paint a section of a memorial mural.

• Reflections and Expressions

Holmes Student Center - Lincoln Room. Help create a time capsule.

1 to 2 p.m.: Multi-Faith Reflection

Holmes Student Center - Carl Sandburg Auditorium.

3 p.m.: Presentation of the memorial wreaths

Martin Luther King Commons. NIU President John Peters will lead procession toward Cole Hall to place wreaths at the site of a permanent memorial to be constructed.

3:15 to 5:30 p.m.:

• Memorial Mosaic

Holmes Student Center - Regency Room

• Reflections and Expressions

Holmes Student Center - Lincoln Room.

• Memorial Concert

Holmes Student Center - Carl Sandburg Auditorium.

4 to 5 p.m.: Honoring emergency responders

Invitation-only reception to thank emergency personnel.

6 p.m.: Candlelight vigil & reception

Martin Luther King Commons. President Peters will lead a vigil in memory of those whose lives were lost. A reception will follow in the Duke Ellington Ballroom.
