Kane Sheriff offers college money

The Kane County Sheriff's Department is accepting applications for a $500 scholarship to be awarded locally this spring through the Illinois Sheriff's Association.

The scholarship is among more than $53,000 in college aid available this year through the statewide organization. The money can be used for tuition, books or fees.

Applicants must be permanent residents of Illinois and full-time students at an Illinois university or college for the 2009-10 school year. There are no other restrictions.

Lt. Pat Gengler said the applicants are asked to write essays, which Kane County Sheriff Pat Perez reviews personally before selecting a winner.

"It's neat to see the younger kids interact with the sheriff," Gengler said.

Applications are available at the sheriff's department, 37W755 Route 38, St. Charles, or online atilsheriff.org. They must be returned by March 13.
