Kids can learn about animals during Elgin museum series

Help stimulate a child's natural curiosity of the diverse world around them through stories, games, crafts, songs and museum objects.

Educational programs for children ages 3 to 7, along with their caregivers, are conducted the second Saturday of each month between 11 a.m. and 12:30 p.m. at the Elgin Public Museum.

For the next three months children will travel far across the globe in the "Where in the World?" series.

The series begins Saturday, Feb. 14, with "In the Arctic: Polar Bears." This interactive program will probe the lives of polar bears and their mysterious habitat in the far north. Through stories and crafts, children will learn about this amazing mammal.

"On the Equator: Giant Tortoise" explores the ancient reptile that can live more 100 years and weigh up to 600 pounds. Learn more about this fascinating animal March 14.

Discover penguins with someone who has actually seen the birds in their natural habitat in the final installment titled "In Antarctica: Penguins" April 4. For this month only, the program will be the first week of April.

The Elgin Public Museum is at 225 Grand Blvd. in Elgin's Lords Park. The fee for each program is $10 per child. Members pay $8. Space is limited so register in advance. To register, call (847) 741-6655.
