No consensus exists over Quentin Road
I was very disappointed to see your article "Most neighbors support Quentin Road expansion" in the Feb. 4 edition of the Daily Herald. Your article was based on one side of a contentious issue involving the county's proposal to build a five-lane highway through Deer Grove Forest Preserve - land that was set aside for the residents of Cook County as the world's first forest preserve beginning in 1916.
As the county's authorized conservation volunteers for Deer Grove, the Deer Grove Natural Areas Volunteers requested a meeting with residents along Quentin to explore their views on the county's proposed widening plan.
The outcome of that meeting, held on Oct. 2, was a compromise solution that featured an expansion to three lanes, a needed bike lane for residents, and a number of other adjustments to reflect a balance between residents' concerns and ecological damage and loss of forest preserve land that would result from the county's five-lane proposal. But before we could reach out to other residents not present at that meeting, a proponent of the five-lane expansion has sought to undermine the tentative compromise plan.
You should also be aware that we have begun our own petition. We have spoken with many residents along Quentin immediately to the north of the Dunhaven Woods subdivision. We have not found ONE resident who supported the county's proposed expansion to five lanes. Thus, the title of your article appears premature.
We will continue to seek out reasonable people who are willing to compromise in realization of the precious, irreplaceable forest preserve land they moved to live near.
