Know the rules before hitting the road

When applying for an Illinois driver's license and every so often when renewing, you are required to take a test on The Rules Of The Road. It seems many folks skipped the part about when to stop for a stopped school bus.

After being forced to stop so many times on Rand Road in Palatine on my way to work on many a weekday morning, I decided it was time for a refresher.

According to the Illinois Rules Of The Road, in the section titled Special Stops, you will find the following: "You do not always need to stop when meeting a stopped school bus on a roadway with four or more lanes. You do not need to stop if you are traveling in the opposite direction of the bus, but you should drive cautiously." Rand Road is 4, sometimes 5 lanes wide. So please, to those who are stopping traffic during rush hour, pick up a copy of the Rules Of The Road and read it. I just wonder how many other rules you don't know about.
