Everyone loses when rights are violated
Can a village ordinance supersede the Constitution of the United States (Fencepost Jan. 19)? Just to be sure, I checked the Bill of Rights and there was nothing about limiting the number of people that were guaranteed the right to peaceable assembly.
Taken to its logical extreme, Mr. Bromley might want to include limitations on the number of citizens allowed to attend parades, festivals, and fireworks displays - events which also attract large crowds, disrupt traffic flow, cost the village money and are potentially dangerous.
I seem to remember from grade school civics that ours is a government of the people, by the people and for (not against) the people. Sorry if exercising our rights is occasionally inconvenient to the village governments we put into power. Just who are we protecting when we give up our Constitutional rights?
