Fremd's fortunes on the Reising

Will Reising was pretty fired up to help Fremd end a three-game losing streak.

Teammate Chris Vainisi found out the hard way during the introductions of the starting lineups for Saturday's nonconference boys basketball game with visiting Leyden.

The 6-foot-5, 220-pound Reising roared out, and on the body bumps players frequently do, hammered the 5-10, 165-pound Vainisi to the floor.

"I caught him a little off-guard tonight," Reising said with a smile of the second time he's done that to Vainisi this season.

Fremd (9-12) then stormed out to score the first 10 points before giving up a shot and led by double figures the final 17:43 of a 66-40 victory in Palatine.

"The best part about basketball is you get a new team, maybe the next night, and you can bounce back," Reising said. "We were ready to take advantage of the situation."

And the Vikings did with their size with Reising (10 points, 7 rebounds), 6-4 Chris Klimek (19 points, 10 rebounds) and 6-5 Charlie Rosenberg (7 rebounds) against a Leyden (10-11) team with no regular taller than 6-2.

Reising also set a tone on the Vikings' second possession when he scored off one of 16 offensive rebounds en route to a commanding 36-15 advantage.

Zach Monaghan scored 11 of his 18 points and hit three of his four 3-pointers in the fourth quarter and finished with 6 assists.

"I thought we came with a real good attitude tonight off some tough losses," said Fremd coach Bob Widlowski. "Will really stepped up inside for us and finished."

On the other end, the Vikings went with a smaller approach and used guards Joe Depaolis, Dan Bruno and Quinton Brown on 19-point averager Alex Regalado. The 6-2 senior came in with six straight 20-point games but missed his first 7 shots and got his only points on a rebound basket with 4:25 to play.

Javi Lazcano (13 points) and Anthony Cushion (10 points) led the Eagles, who shot 8-for-19 on 3s but just 7-for-23 inside the arc.

"The team also did a nice job of finding him on the drive to the basket," Widlowski said.

"I knew I could sag off of my guy to take the charge early," Reising said, "and he didn't attack the basket as much."
