Wrong-way driver has history of DUIs

A man accused of drunkenly causing a wrong-way crash near Edwardsville that killed three people and injured another has several DUI convictions on his record.

Investigators say 46-year-old Newton Keene of St. Louis was driving the wrong way in the southbound lanes of Illinois Route 255 when his car collided with another vehicle.

The dead included a Tennessee woman, one of her friends and one of her children. Her 11-year-old daughter remains hospitalized, as does Keene.

Court records show Keene's DUI convictions date to 1992 and that he was driving on a revoked license. He's now charged with 14 felonies in Thursday's wreck, including reckless homicide and DUI.

Keene couldn't be reached for comment. It isn't immediately clear if he has an attorney.
