Work vans get OK for overnight parking in North Aurora

People who drive a company van or pickup truck home from work and park it on the driveway won't be violating North Aurora law any more.

The village board voted this week to allow commercial vehicles with Class B and D license plates to be parked outside of garages, as long as the vehicles are less than 90 inches tall.

"There's a lot of people that take trucks home for work," village administrator Sue McLaughlin said. It was illegal to park such vehicles outside, but that law was loosely enforced until recently.

When the village stepped up enforcement and started issuing tickets, residents complained.

The proposal approved Monday did differ from the original proposal from staff, which would have required vehicles bearing a company's logo or lettering to be parked in a garage. Trustees cut that out when discussing the proposal last month.

In Illinois, Class D plates are for flat-weight trucks and vans more 8,000 pounds; B plates are for trucks and vans less than 8,000 pounds.
