Carol Stream agrees to study flood problem

The Carol Stream village board on Monday took the first steps for a flood study that may help residents beleaguered by water.

The village hired Christopher B. Burke Engineering to do the study of the Venture subdivision at a cost of a little more than $69,000. The neighborhood is bordered by Lies Road, Chatam Road, Provincetown and Dorchester drives.

Although many areas of Carol Stream flooded because of heavy rains this past September, this area had three homes affected last year. However, it has experienced flood damages over the last several years.

"We are seeing some progress," Village Manager Joseph Breinig said of the village's flood solutions.

Breinig said the village has taken the approach of identifying the fixes that are cost-effective.

The study itself will be broken down into three parts, the first looking at potential projects and costs. Three alternatives will be provided in the second part and a preferred project will be proposed in the end.

The village will also coordinate the study with Glenbard North. The high school is performing a storm water management study for their field turf replacement project.

The study is scheduled to be done by August.

Breinig said the village also submitted to DuPage County the scope of services for Klein Creek, which has had extensive flooding, especially last September.

The residents surrounding the creek made an appeal last month to Carol Stream and the county to take action on the flooding. The county said it was planning a survey of the area, which may take up to a year.
