Batavia cops charge caregiver with ID theft

An in-home caregiver has been charged with stealing a Batavia woman's identity and withdrawing money from her bank account, police said Monday.

Susan L. Johnson, 30, of the 100 block of North Depot Street, Somonauk, was arrested Friday and charged with financial exploitation of the elderly and identity theft, both felonies.

Batavia Police Det. James Nettnin said Johnson stole less than $300 from a woman who is in her 60s on the day after Christmas. Johnson has been the woman's part-time, in-home caregiver for "several months," he said.

Johnson also was charged with possession of a controlled substance and other drug-related offenses after police found marijuana and prescription medications during the arrest, Nettnin said.

The incident was unrelated to last week's arrests of two Batavia residents on charges of forgery and financial exploitation of the elderly, according to police.
