Witnesses: Cop looked like robbery suspect

Investigators on the case of a Carbondale police officer accused of robbing a bank once joked during the probe that the patrolman looked like the suspect shown in surveillance images.

Witnesses testified during a hearing last week that James Gaddis used his service handgun in allegedly robbing the First Southern Bank in Carbondale with his neighbor last October.

Authorities say two suspects wearing motorcycle helmets robbed the bank of about $22,000.

Gaddis' police supervisor says officers who examined the bank's surveillance video joked that one of the robbers looked like Gaddis.

Police contend Gaddis made a bogus 911 call to divert police to a trailer park on the other side of town during the robbery. A prosecutor says investigators later recognized Gaddis' voice in the taped 911 call.

Gaddis is suspended without pay and jailed on $1 million.
